The Comprehensive Thyroid Function Test includes testing for autoimmunity against your thyroid. Thyroid autoimmunity is the most common class of autoimmune diseases, affecting 2-5% of the population, with rates thought to be 10 times higher in women, potentially affecting 5-15% of women.

Healthy thyroid function is essential to feeling energetic and vital. The thyroid is one of the key regulators of global energy production in the body, and thyroid dysfunction can be a source of fatigue or loss of vitality, with many patients not knowing that problems with their thyroid are causing their symptoms.

Hypothyroidism (reduced production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid) slows down metabolism and energy production, resulting in a range of symptoms including fatigue, weight changes, and mood disturbances.

In the UK about 1 in 50 people are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, but undiagnosed hypothyroidism may affect as many as 1 in 10 people. Additionally, the likelihood of developing hypothyroidism is higher for women and increases with age.

This test measures FT3 and FT4, the active thyroid hormones, and TSH, the pituitary hormone that regulates their production. Deviations in these levels can signify an underactive or overactive thyroid, which can impact the body's energy production and metabolic rate.

Markers Included In The Test

Free T3 (FT3): Free T3 (FT3) measures the level of triiodothyronine, a thyroid hormone that regulates metabolism in your body's cells. High FT3 levels can suggest an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) leading to increased metabolism, while low levels can indicate an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) causing slowed metabolism, and symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance

Free T4 (FT4): Free T4 (FT4) is a test that measures the level of free thyroxine, a key hormone produced by the thyroid gland. High levels can indicate an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), which can cause symptoms such as rapid heart rate, weight loss, and anxiety, while low levels may suggest an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), leading to fatigue, weight gain, and depression.

T4: T4, also known as thyroxine, is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, growth, and development. An imbalance in T4 levels can lead to conditions such as hypothyroidism (low levels), causing fatigue and weight gain, or hyperthyroidism (high levels), leading to rapid heart rate and weight loss.

Thyroglobulin Abs: Thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAbs) are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that target thyroglobulin, a protein involved in thyroid hormone production. The presence of TgAbs in the blood can be an indicator of an autoimmune thyroid disorder such as Hashimoto's disease or Graves' disease.

Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies: Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO antibodies) are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that target thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme involved in thyroid hormone production. The presence of TPO antibodies in the blood can indicate an autoimmune thyroid disorder, such as Hashimoto's disease or Graves' disease.

TSH: Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland to regulate the production of thyroid hormones, which control the body's metabolism. Abnormal TSH levels can indicate thyroid disorders. High levels may suggest an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and low levels an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Both conditions can cause a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, weight changes, and mood disturbances.
